Competition for Imus's chair is intense with people calling in old favors and backroom lobbying reaching sometimes nasty levels. Smerconish tried out last week (in a story first mentioned here but not credited anywhere, gee big shock there) but for him it's going to be an uphill battle. Word from MSNBC has it that Michael's the constant focus on the *me* aspect hurt him with those working on the show.
